What Is an AI-Generated Image?
Understand AI-generated images, how they are made and why illustration, evidence, provenance, accessibility and review must stay distinct.
An AI-generated image is a visual output created by a model or application from instructions, references or other inputs. It may be a new illustration, a variation of a supplied image or part of an editing workflow. It is not automatically a photograph, a record of an event or evidence that something exists.
For marketing, label the image's role before using it. Decide whether it is an illustration, an edited asset, a photograph or evidence, then check provenance, accuracy, accessibility and human approval.
Different visual roles
The word “image” can hide important differences.

If a page uses both a generated illustration and a real chart, label them differently. Keep the chart's source, date and method next to the evidence. Keep the illustration's role clear in its caption or surrounding copy where readers could otherwise misunderstand it.
Check for visible errors
Review the visual itself, not only the prompt. Look for:
- incorrect labels or numbers;
- distorted objects or hands;
- impossible layouts or text;
- misleading cultural or demographic signals;
- details that conflict with the accompanying copy; and
- visual clutter that hides the main point.
An attractive image can still be wrong for the task. If the message depends on a precise diagram, use a controlled graphic or human-made layout when that is clearer.
Consider accessibility
Provide meaningful alternative text when the image carries information. If it is decorative, mark it as decorative in the publishing system. Keep text in the surrounding page where possible instead of making a reader decode essential information from a picture.
Check contrast, legibility, motion and colour dependence. A generated image does not remove the need for accessible design or a human description.
Keep rights questions open

A simple label
Before the visual moves to a draft, write one sentence such as: “AI-generated illustrative image for a fictional explainer; not a photograph or evidence; reviewed for relevance and accessibility.”
That sentence will not solve every question, but it prevents the role from being forgotten during handoff.
